Comment about the game:
I originally posted this over on the giveaway site where this game has been given away twice in the past year:
The options screen gives you sliders for music, sound and mouse speed; the latter is a great addition as with it you can slow down the mouse speed and effectively make the game harder by slowing down the ability to move the bat, which would mean much more forward thinking on the players’ behalf. With the good ball physics this combo’ should be a great addition and I haven’t even started.
Reading my previous post over on the giveaway site I can see I wasn’t as impressed with the game as I am now after playing it much more. I’d previously played the demo and decided not to buy it, but after having the opportunity to explore it further, thanks to this giveaway project I ended up buying it several months ago after reformatting the computers I’d installed it onto.
You can alter the screen resolution via the options menu from 800 x 600 up to 1600 x 1200, all at 32 bits. The game doesn’t support 16 bit, so if you are using one of those old VGA monitors as opposed to sVGA (I still had one as a back up until last year, although I’d purchased it with my very first 386 computer back in 1989…I very much doubt you’d be able to buy one now, lol) you’ll have problems with this game.
You can also toggle the game from full screen to windows. And for those who have hand handicaps, the game is fully controlled by the mouse.
There are 36 pages to the help menu, however instead of showing all the brick types and power ups on a single page the developer has chosen to spread them out over the full 36 pages. I love the intro’ backdrop and the in game screens, both give a feeling of South Sea Islands and crystal clear waters. It would have been nice to have had more than one background for the intro though, although there are five different scenes found in game; however this is only a suggestion and not a gripe.
There are 22 brick types and 24 power ups (10 for the bat, 9 for the ball and 7 others), for example there are key and lock bricks of various colors. You have to catch a key of a specific color to unlock a lock of the same color, only one key can be carried at any one time, {(I think), I’ve not played it for a while}, There are two types of ball duplicator bricks, twin daggers that split off in opposite directions destroying everything in their path, a compass that flips the whole level 180 degrees, teleporters as well as lots more., all of which add interest and replay value to this excellent arkanoid. Some of the bricks emulate power ups, several of which also have their counterparts in the power ups that are released from special bricks that can easily be identified, although the power up can’t. for example the accelerator and decelerator bricks with their matching power ups, the ball speed up and slow down . I wont describe any more as I think the discovery aspect of what a game holds is part of the pleasure and excitement of playing a game such as this.. I would say though that the brick attributes are one of the things that makes this game stand out from many other arkanoids that I own; although it is far from one of my favorite arkanoids. It is none the less a well crafted and interesting arkanoid, that I would rate 30 to 40th from my top arkanoids; from now approaching 200. (I know I’m mad, but as mentioned previously, there is method in my excessiveness)
You can create multiple profiles, and on exiting a game it will be saved at the exact place you left it, so make sure the ball was not approaching the bat, as it’s a good chance you’ll lose a life as I did when booting up the game after quite a while, lol.
To pause the game you press the escape button, this will take you to a menu that is basically the same as the main menu, where you can check high scores, the help menu or exit the game if you wish. Pressing the Esc key twice will take you back to the game.
Rather than returning to a previous level you can choose to start a new game; in this case your score from the saved game will be put up on the score board and you will be presented with the choice of starting right from the beginning or specific levels that you’ve already attained in the game you’ve just quit. However you can’t just choose any levels as they are saved in blocks of five. For example you can start at level 1 but not 4 – 5 or you can select level 6 but not 7 – 10 etc etc.
One of the new delights you get with this particular arkanoid (compared with all the arkanoids I can remember playing) is that at the end of a level, whatever balls you have in play are saved, and when you’ve collected 10 balls you get to play a bonus level which isn’t counted in the 150 levels that you get with this game. The bonus levels are distinctly different from the main levels. I’d prepared some examples, but have decided to let you find out what the bonus levels hold as I want to get this review posted, lol.
You can earn these bonus’ in another way as well. :), and even win two bonus levels in succession when combining the two ways of earning them. :D. These extra aspects to the game give it much more replay-ability than a lot of the brick busters I could name.
The only problem I found with this game was if I focused on trying to collect items that would help towards gaining one of these bonus levels, as then I wouldn’t be focusing on the ball properly and would then invariably lose a ball. By the way, if you have more than one ball in play at the end of a level, all are counted towards a bonus level, so it isn’t beyond the possibility to earn a bonus level every few games if you’re good at juggling balls, lol
