Art Stories combines match-three action with special quests to give a refreshing makeover to a popular style of gameplay. In the match-three levels, the player swaps orbs to create matches and clear tiles off the board. Matching four or more orbs creates Power Orbs that can clear multiple tiles, such as a waterfall that can wash away the orbs in several columns and a paint can that can eliminate every orb of a certain color. Activating multiple Power Orbs at once is one of the high points of Art Stories.

Sprinkled throughout the 100 match-three levels are 24 adventure levels in which the player matches orbs to create items he or she can then use on an animated scene. For example, the player might have to match three red orbs to create a bomb and then click on the bomb to fire it at an attacking pirate ship!
